Dr. Jack Leong, the founding (and departing) director of the world-acclaimed Richard Charles Lee Canada–Hong Kong Library, will be joined by Prof. Diana Lary and Eleanor Yuen, both of the University of British Columbia, to reflect on his thirteen some years’ journey in building the largest research collection for Hong Kong as well as Canada–Hong Kong studies outside Hong Kong. Among the notable collections in the Library are: the Hong Kong Handover Collection Digital Collection, the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement Archive, David Lai’s Research Archive on Chinese Canadian Studies, Vivienne Poy’s Senator Papers, and materials on Cantonese Opera in Canada.

Jack Leong has been the founding Director of the Richard Charles Lee Canada–Hong Kong Library at the University of Toronto since 2007. In that role, he provides leadership in building the largest research collection on Hong Kong and Chinese Canadian studies in North America. He has planned and established the new facility funded by a three million donation with collaboration from units across the library system. The outstanding collection and community outreach that Jack has built contributed to the establishment of the Richard Charles Lee Chinese Canadian Archive supported by a four million endowment donation in 2019.

Jack’s scholarly interests and publications include international and community engagement, access to resources, science fiction, Chinese Canadian studies and intercultural studies. Through his research and professional activities, he has broadened his networks with fellow librarians and scholars globally.

Diana Lary, Professor Emerita of History at the University of British Columbia, was Co-Director of the Canada and Hong Kong Project.

Eleanor Yuen is former Head of Asian Library at the University of British Columbia.

This conversation is co-organized by the UBC Hong Kong Studies Initiative and the Richard Charles Lee Canada–Hong Kong Library and is co-sponsored by: UBC Department of Asian Studies, Department of History, Centre for Chinese Research, Asian Canada and Asian Migration Studies, and the Interdisciplinary Histories Research Cluster.
