Tommy Tong

Tommy is a MA student in the Department of Asian Studies at UBC working with Dr Helena Wu. He specialises in Hong Kong popular culture with stand-up comedy in particular. His MA thesis attempts to examine the transformation of Hongkongers’ political anxiety reflected off Dayo Wong Tze-Wah’s stand-up comedy from 1990 to 2018. His research interests range from humour studies to cultural history. He is recently also exploring post-war food histories of East Asian cultures including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Prior to UBC, Tommy completed a BA (1st-class honours) with a major in Hong Kong Studies, a major in German, and a minor in Japanese Cultures from the University of Hong Kong. He worked as an RA in the Department of History at Hong Kong Baptist University for two years. He now works as an TA for the Ritsumeikan-UBC Programme at UBC.
